Exploring color and sound with kids in special education.Learning about molecules in chemistry class in SMALLab. .: SMALLab - the Situated Multimedia Arts Learning Lab :. My research focuses on multimedia spaces as two points of entry: (1) as places where access to multimodal learning allows access for learners with highly unique and individual needs, and (2) as places of collaborative and reciprocal learning that are supported through positive social interaction, exploration, community and creativity for students with varying (dis)abilities. The goal of this work is not concerned with applying multimedia systems to fix behavioral problems, but rather, with creating opportunities where students and teachers can are agents in designing learning systems, strengthening the interpersonal ties and relationships they have with each other, and developing their own talents, interests, skill sets and perspectives through co-design. *Also see the 'computation' page for more information on the SMALLab system.

Presently, this work seeks to analyze how and why game structures plus multimodal environments could be a strong fit for support social play and learning design for our students with socio-communicative challenges, such as those with autism. This work has been presented at the 2009 MAST Workshop, Games+Learning+Society 6.0, and Foundations of Digital Games 2010.
